Acting Foundations: Get Personal

Get Personal

Get Personal is the heart of the Foundation classes. It focuses on the human being and the rich histories and emotions that each actors has. In order to create authentic emotional characters on camera and on stage, actors need multiple tools in their toolbox to “be” rather than “act” over and over. Get Personal introduces and guides actors to what these tools are and how to safely use them

Actors should come to class with Uta Hagen’s “A Challenge for the Actor” read, an emotionally charged fully memorized monologue from contemporary stage, film or TV that is 1.5 minutes or less. Full role prep on the source material should already be completed prior to class starting. In addition, a playlist and other tools should be gathered, so registering early is recommended.

These are emotionally intense classes and require self-reflection, self-honesty and outside self-work. It is not a replacement for therapy, nor is it group share. This class is recommended for experienced actors and should not be the first acting class taken at Verve (or ever).

Get Personal, Level 1

About the Class

LEVEL 1
Get Personal Level 1 starts with examining where we are and where we’ve been through our five senses. We learn how to examine the senses, then connect to and access our emotions through them. We learn how to transfer and apply them to a memorized, prepared monologue. Just as importantly, we learn how to turn them back off. In additional to the senses and emotional work, Level 1 also covers particularization in your role preparation and tackling historic and period roles.

Get Personal, Level 2

About the Class

LEVEL 2
Get Personal Level 2 deepens the work started in Level 1. Actors will add more tools to their toolbox to help the trust the process and themselves more. Focus will be on vulnerability and being seen while in the work as the video camera will be used in some of the classes. This prepares actors for the practical application of working an emotional scene take after take on a film or TV set.
